An 18-year-old girl simply identified as Waliyah, fell into a domestic well in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara state.
Her corpse has now been retrieved by the Kwara Fire Service.
The unfortunate incident occurred around 6pm Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at Ile-Olodo Ita Merin – Alore area of Ilorin.
According to Daily Trust, the teenager suddenly jumped into the well to the bewilderment of some residents shortly after having a friendly conversation with neighbours in the compound.
Spokesperson of the service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, said the recovered corpse has been handed over to her family.
“On the 7th of November 2023, at 18:46 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to an emergency rescue operation in the Ile-olodo Ita Merin – Alore area of Ilorin, Ilorin West Local Government Area Kwara State,” the statement read.
“Tragically, an 18-year-old girl named Waliyah had drowned in a domestic well. The dedicated personnel of the Kwara State Fire Service successfully recovered her lifeless body and respectfully handed it over to Alhaji Adisa Akanbi Magaji of Ile Olodo, Ita-Merin, Ilorin.”
Reacting to the sad incident, the Director of the service, Prince Falade John, stressed the importance of safety consciousness to the general public.
Prince Falade issued a stern warning to parents and guardians, urging them to refrain from sending their children to fetch water from domestic wells.
