Tolu Ogunlesi, an aide to former President, Muhammadu Buhari has opined that any doctor insisting on prescribing popular antibiotic, Augmentin, to their patient has a lot of explaining to do.
This is coming after Nigerians have taken to social media to lament about the hike in the prices of drugs in the country.
Tolu stated this while reacting to a post shared on X by a doctor who decried the price increase of the drug.
The doctor shared a photo of Augmentin on his handle with the price tag N57, 000 stamped on it.
The doctor wrote;
”This is just a basic antibiotic and it’s 57k!!!!!!!!
I can’t afford it as a doctor on just my salary!
Omo!”
Reacting to his post, Tolu alleged that there is a crazy ‘’price-gouging” on Augmentin at the moment and that there are cheaper brands of anti-biotics that do the same thing Augmentin does.
He mentioned that the cheaper drugs have same ingredients as Augmentin and are ten times cheaper.
‘’Have to say that there’s crazy PRICE-GOUGING currently going on in Nigeria with GSK’s brand of Amoxycillin+Clavulanate Potassium (branded ‘Augmentin’), but other brands containing THE SAME active ingredients are TEN TIMES cheaper than this.
Any doctor INSISTING on prescribing Augmentin at this time has a lot of explaining to do.”
